This site is dedicated to the Madonna Di Montevergine.
The Madonna Di Montevergine Committee came into being over 50 years ago, the members being a committed group of people who have shown their dedication to the Madonna by working tirelessly in order to present one of Adelaide’s most famous cultural and religious festivals. Held on the last Sunday of September it attracts people from all over Australia.
Starting with Mass at the Hectorville Church the devotees walk some kilometers to St. Francis Of Assissi church in Newton to celebrate Mass. Whereas mass was originally celebrated in the church proper it has grown to such an extent that the committee now hires a huge marquis. La Festa Della Madonna Di Motevergine now fills the Marquis and the church combined. The mass which is usually conducted by a visiting priest from Italy is piped into the church which is filled to capacity.
Once mass is over the congregation is blessed by the priest and then the celebrations begin. Families and friends get together over pizza, pasta or whatever else is on offer on the day. Refreshments include soft drinks, beer wine, water and of course coffee. It’s always a good idea to leave some room for cakes and gelati. There is something for everyone including souvenirs and mementos of the day.
Festivities continue throughout the day and into the night with a host of entertainers culminating with spectacular fireworks.
